Software
Software in a computer is a set of instructions, programs, or data that tells the computer how to perform specific tasks. Unlike hardware (the physical parts like CPU, monitor, keyboard), software is intangible—it cannot be touched but is essential for hardware to function.
Types of Software:
-
System Software – Helps run and manage the computer’s hardware.
Examples: Operating System (Windows, Linux, macOS), Device Drivers. -
Application Software – Programs designed to perform specific tasks for the user.
Examples: MS Word, Excel, Web browsers, Tally, Photoshop. -
Programming Software – Tools used to create other software.
Examples: Compilers, IDEs like Visual Studio, Eclipse.
Key Points:
-
Software provides instructions to hardware.
-
It can be installed, updated, or removed.
-
Without software, hardware cannot work.
